Restoring Reliable Feed Delivery for a High-Performance Barramundi Nursery
Improving feed system reliability, reporting visibility, and operational control for Humpty Doo Barramundi.
Humpty Doo Barramundi is one of Australia’s leading aquaculture producers, operating advanced nursery and grow-out systems for saltwater barramundi production.
Maintaining precise and consistent feeding across nursery tanks is critical to fish health, growth performance, and production forecasting. The operation relies on automated feeding infrastructure to manage feed delivery volumes and track feed consumption across production cycles.
The Client
The Problem
Humpty Doo Barramundi required improved reliability and visibility from their nursery feed delivery system. The nursery team was experiencing inconsistent portion delivery to tanks, believed to be related to valve timing and net-position calibration issues within the feeding system.
At the same time, a software update had reduced access to the daily and weekly feed consumption reporting that the team previously relied on. This limited their ability to track feed usage across individual tanks and the nursery as a whole.
The operation also required better tracking of feed stored in silos, including feed type, size, brand, and mix ratios. This information was important for monitoring production trials, managing feed changes, and maintaining accurate cycle totals across nursery production.
The Solution
AFSystems worked with the Humpty Doo nursery team to diagnose the root causes of the feeding inconsistencies and restore practical reporting functionality within the system.
The process involved gathering operational feedback from site, verifying valve behaviour and portion delivery performance, and coordinating improvements across both the mechanical system and DSM software platform.
This approach ensured that both hardware performance and software usability were addressed together, improving reliability while restoring the production reporting tools the team depended on.
The Outcome
AFSystems supported the project through a series of targeted technical improvements:
- Diagnosing valve timing and portion delivery behaviour across nursery tanks
- Verifying and calibrating valve net positions to ensure accurate feed portions
- Coordinating DSM software enhancements to restore clear on-screen reporting
- Enabling improved visibility of tank and nursery feed consumption totals
- Supporting better tracking of silo feed types, sizes, and mixes for production trials
- Providing ongoing technical support and spare parts access to maintain consistent system operation
This helped stabilise the feed delivery system while improving the usability of feed data for production monitoring and management.
Following these improvements, the nursery feed system returned to stable and reliable operation, consistently delivering feed to tanks.
The DSM software updates restored production reporting and allowed feed data to be viewed directly on screen, rather than only through generated reports. This also improved compatibility with Humpty Doo’s other fish management programs, allowing feed data to be better integrated into their broader production tracking systems.
Mechanical adjustments reduced strain on the feeding equipment, improving overall reliability and helping the system continue to perform consistently across nursery production cycles.
Client Experience with AFS
“The additions to the software are great and with compatibility to our other fish management programs we will be able to make good use of feed data. Now that we have sorted the issues with the system it looks to be running well and sending feed consistently. The mechanical side is working quite well and has taken the strain off the system that it previously struggled with.”
